GENERAL FUNCTION

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, the VPL Product Creation Engineer uses creativity and a diverse range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of user problems. The Engineer participates in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. Through work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborating cross-functionally and with outside sources, the Engineer sees products through to manufacture.  The individual aims to balance product comfort, performance, and appearance and contributes to overall team goals toward innovative and harmonious designs that compliment and enable technology. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports new product development in line with product roadmaps and timelines
  • Tests mechanical properties, materials characterization, and analytical testing to support development
  • Ensures emphasis on product performance and comfort for Eyewear, Goggles, Helmets and Accessories groups
  • Drives and maintains minimum performance standards for all products
  • Owns key technical development areas as part of a larger new product development project
  • Works in a team to develop new products, improve test methods, evaluate competitor products, and create new intellectual property
  • Performs statistical data analysis, sufficiently documents results, and proactively reports findings to relevant partners on a timely basis
  • Drives generation of lab and field testing data to support product specs
  • Works with vendors as needed to support projects and troubleshoot designs
  • Owns testing equipment including calibration, supplies, and maintenance
  • Holds a strong commitment to safe practices including SOP’s, chemical inventory, labeling, and housekeeping

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering or related Engineering Degree
  • 3+ years of experience in Engineering
  • Experience within product development and/or manufacturing of consumer products, particularly hard goods
  • Travels to plants or vendors, both domestically and internationally
  • Knowledge of CAD, human factors and how to analyze data, and create data visualization to guide decision making
  • Able to support multiple projects and work within a larger team
  • Self-accountable drive to complete tasks and push projects forward to meet deadlines
  • Desire to learn from colleagues and independently to expand the team’s knowledge and skills
  • Strong attention to detail while understanding the big picture
  • Comfortable working on the borders of risk, actively communicating among a team to establish a design direction using human factors, creating prototypes that prove it, and driving product performance

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Materials Science Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or related
  • Background in polymeric materials processing, testing, and theory
  • Experience with mechanical properties testing in optics and Impact Testing, etc.
  • Experience with coatings and coatings testing
  • Experience operating test lab equipment or in a manufacturing plant environment
